Reading the old TV's hole pattern

Before the old TV comes down, the installer reads the four threaded holes on its back, which form the VESA pattern. A new mount must match the pattern in spacing, thread and bolt length, and the pattern is also the way to check whether an existing bracket will take a new screen.

Patching and move-outs

A removed mount leaves four holes in the wall. They are filled and sanded, and the paint is matched by the owner. In a rented home, the lease decides how holes are patched at move-out; renters ask the landlord before drilling. In a condo or townhome the association may also have a say about exterior fixtures.
