A backer board behind the niche

A niche is often framed with a few studs and a header, and the studs may not fall behind the places a mount needs. A plywood backer fastened across the framing before the drywall goes on gives the plate solid wood anywhere in the opening, and later a different TV can be hung without hunting for studs.

A backer board gives a niche or media wall a solid face. A plywood panel screwed across the studs before the drywall goes on gives the plate solid wood anywhere on the wall, so a screen can move or be replaced later.

What the numbers show

  1. Plywood backer A sheet of plywood spans several studs and gives the lag bolts solid wood wherever the TV ends up.
  2. Studs The panel is screwed to every stud it crosses, so it behaves as part of the frame.
  3. Panel screws Screws through the panel into each stud hold it flat against the framing.
  4. Drywall over the panel The wall finish goes over the panel and hides it completely.
  5. Lag bolt into the panel The bolt passes through plate, drywall and the plywood into solid wood, never into the drywall alone.

Pre-wired boxes and what they do and do not do

A niche usually has a power box and an HDMI box set behind the screen. They simplify the cable route, but their location is fixed, so the mount, the TV's ports and the plate have to be chosen to match.

  • Power box: a receptacle at the back; the TV plugs in with its own cord.
  • HDMI box: a short cable to a plate in the cabinet.
  • Gap: the mount holds the TV off the wall far enough for plugs.

Distance, size and recliner rows

The room sets the screen size. A rule of thumb is a distance of about one and a half to two and a half times the screen diagonal, checked with a tape outline from the actual seats. In a two-row room the back row sets the minimum size, and the front row sets the tilt.

Media Niche & Home Theater TV Installation — common questions

Can a bigger TV fit a framed niche?

Only up to the opening; a larger set is usually hung on the wall in front, and the niche stays for equipment.

Does a theater need hidden wiring?

It is common; in-wall rated kits and CL3 HDMI go in the stud bay, and a new outlet is an electrician's job.
